Registration for residence permit

General Rule: All students who will be staying in Antwerp longer than 3 months have to apply for a residence permit.

The 'Residence Permit' is  a requirement for all nationals not belonging to the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco or Switzerland AND staying longer than 90 days in Belgium. You must register at the municipality/department of foreigners within 8 working days after arrival.

European exchange students staying for one semester, however, are advised not to start up the application procedure.  Practice has shown that the procedure takes long (several weeks).

The registration for the 'Residence Permit' is done with the help of the International Relations Office (IRO). However, the IRO can only handle applications for the 'Residence Permit' from students living in the city of Antwerp. Students not living in Antwerp should complete all formalities autonomously.
The procedure through IRO is only for newcomers.  If you have already been registered before, another procedure has to be followed.
In case you have questions, please contact hilde.didden@ua.ac.be.

Students can register through IRO upon arrival in Antwerp. Exchange students should log in in their personal file in Mobility-Online and complete the relevant steps in the workflow. Hand the signed application form (including annexes) in at the IRO. The IRO passes on the application files to the foreigners' office of Antwerp and will guide the students through the different steps of the registration process. Usually the residence card is available within 8 weeks.

Students have to submit the following documents to the IRO:

·         the completed application form ;
